Where is Earth’s
oil found?
Introduction
Oil is one of the world’s most critical natural resources. Its location and formation come from complex processes that occurred over millions of years.
Oil is primarily found between sedimentary rocks where remains of organisms have settled. Lack of oxygen and intense heat and pressure eventually formed oil and gas deposits.
The question
How did past geoscience processes shape the formation of Earth’s oil reserves? How did this result in an uneven distribution of the resources?
Summary of Methods
Quantitative Methodology
We used interviews, focus groups, and participant observations.
Qualitative Methodology
We used surveys and experiments.
Results
Top locations of oil: Deserts, arctic, river deltas
Oil is found in different parts of the world, though most are in regions with the oldest and most sedimentary rocks. These include the Middle East, North America, Central and South America, Africa, some parts of Europe, and Asia.
The location of oil today is a result of different factors. Oil is made up of the organic matter of dead plants and animals trapped in sedimentary rock built up over millions of years. This organic matter is compressed and subjected to heat, pressure, and lack of oxygen, forming the oil we now know.
Analysis of Results
Conclusion
Geoscience processes that shaped the Earth played a role in forming minerals and other energy resources. Processes like plate tectonics created mountain ranges and faults. Weathering, erosion, and sedimentation built up layers that were factors in the oil production process.
These processes change the physical landscape and result in the uneven distribution of the materials we value as resources. Some mountain ranges and sedimentary basins contain certain mineral deposits. Others may have had the right conditions to form oil. Some areas may not have the same kind of mineral resources but have land that is rich for farming and agriculture.
